Handmade tortillas by “Tacos El Jefe” in Tijuana surprise due to their great flavor and thickness

The maize flavor was the most prominent taste when Chef Danny took his first bite

On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Tacos El Jefe” located at Blvd. de las Bellas Artes 19603. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a carne asada taco priced at $1.35 dollars ($27 pesos) and an al pastor taco priced at $1 dollar ($20 pesos).

Carne Asada Taco

This taco has carne asada, onion, coriander, guacamole, beans, and is served on a handmade tortilla. It was quite evident that the tortilla was handmade due to its thickness and size, which were the immediate highlights. Chef Danny tasted the intense maize flavor when he took his first bite, to the point that it overshadowed the rest of the ingredients. Danny claimed that if it was only a little bit thicker, it could become a sope.

The meat had a soft texture and its flavor was a little subtle. Once Chef Danny tasted the protein by itself, he was able to identify the marinated taste, but not the smoked coal flavor. On this occasion, the guacamole was actually authentic, but the amount was quite small. Though it did need some salsa, our host thought that the tortilla was a big plus which is why this taco gets a rating of 7.9.

Price: $1.35 dollars ($27 pesos)

Al Pastor Taco

This taco has adobada meat, onion, cilantro, guacamole, pineapple, and is served on two packaged corn tortillas. The first thing to note is that the taco was stuffed quite well, since it had a lot of meat, so only its flavor was going to determine whether it was worth the price.

When he took his first bite, Chef Danny was surprised by the salsa’s spiciness. Regarding the meat, our host would have liked it if it had come directly from the spit since, due to its cut, he was able to deduce it was taken from there and then griddled. The meat’s seasoning was intense, which is why it was similar to chorizo. The meat’s thickness and the packaged tortillas were things Chef Danny didn’t really like, which is why this taco gets a rating of 6.8.

Price: $1 dollar ($20 pesos)
