Avenida Revolución is one of Tijuana's most emblematic areas, tangible proof of the city's history, creativity, and capacity to grow.
It was inaugurated in 1889 and got its current name on November 20, 1932. Considered by many Tijuana native historians as the first paved street, as well as the first to have electrical and phone services, this avenue marked the beginning of modernity in the city.
“La Revu” is a special place that is both a meeting point for tourists and locals and the home of multiple tourist attractions, from restaurants and bars to museums and casinos.
Avenida Revolución is currently transforming to showcase the best of Tijuana and this exciting renaissance has resulted in a new tourist walkway that goes from 4th Street to 7th Street. This is a pedestrian space that invites all families and visitors to enjoy its rich cultural, artistic, gastronomic, and handcrafted offerings.
Gate to Tijuana's Historic Downtown
For starters, a threshold has been installed that welcomes you to Tijuana's Historic Downtown, making of this avenue a meeting point where art and family gatherings come together.
This ambitious project aims to improve the image of the emblematic Avenida Revolución: a family friendly place that invites everyone to explore it and enjoy the best of the city.
Architect Jorge Gracia, designer of this threshold, has shared his vision: "This threshold is the gate to the Historic Downtown; arrows represent the meeting point of several cultures and let you know that everyone is welcome in Tijuana."
Free Carrousel
A charming two-story carrousel is one of the new attractions added to this new, exciting walkway!
This magical carrousel experience is free, open every day from 5 PM to 9 PM, and located between 5th and 6th Streets.
Artistic Entertainment
Avenida Revolución’s scheduled activities will catch the attention of everyone in the family. Street theater plays, musical performances, plastic arts, and poetry readings, and much more will all be taking place here!
This new walkway both revitalizes Avenida Revolución and strengthens the community spirit of Tijuana. As such, this place becomes a true cultural stage that allows emerging artists to show off their talents.
First mural of the Yumano people in Tijuana
Tijuana is also celebrating the inauguration of the first mural dedicated to the Yumano people with a significant artwork located in 5th Street.
This is an initiative promoted by Rescatarte Ticuan, a community project committed to the recovery and restoration of public spaces through art.
At the inauguration, Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana emphasized the significance of making art in the city a priority. "There must be identity in Tijuana. We must be fully committed with culture and exalt our roots and our ancestors," he claimed.
The mayor also sees this mural as the beginning of a series of works that will represent the region's rich cultural heritage: "We cannot forget where we came from, it is the essence of our life." The mural captures historic, cultural, and natural elements that come together to reflect the vibrant identity and legacy of the Yumano people.
Taco Museum: A tribute to the region's gastronomy
Tijuana is world renowned for its delicious tacos and, as a result, Avenida Revolución has opened a museum dedicated to this classic Mexican dish.
The Taco Museum not only pays tribute to local gastronomy but boosts tourism by offering an immersive experience about the rich culture surrounding this dish. This means that beyond eating delicious suadero, birria, asada, and adobada tacos, you will also learn how to make them!
This venue has 9 themed rooms named after tacos' essential ingredients and complements. For example, you can play on a rubber swing or a slide that looks as if you're being eaten by an asado taco at the Onion Room. Interactive pits with balls and screens where visitors can film fun moments are also a feature here!
This museum's second floor also has a bar that serves everything from classic cocktails to refreshing horchata water, the perfect companions to any meal!
Alleys full of cultural identity l
The Avenida Revolución alleys popped up almost half a century ago with curiosity and jewelry shops but as time has passed, they have become artistic centers, bars, and other tourist attractions available for everybody.
The most famous alleys in Avenida Revolución are Pasaje Gómez, Pasaje México, and Pasaje Rodríguez. These alleys have become popular destinations full of local establishments that offer handcrafted items, coffee, and art galleries all of which offer something for people of all ages.
Hotel Caesars: Birthplace of the Caesar Salad
Hotel Caesars is known for being the birthplace of one of Baja California's most iconic gastronomic dishes: the Caesar Salad.
The 100th anniversary of this delicious dish created by César Cardini, owner and cook of the historic Restaurante Caesars, is being celebrated in 2024. This world-famous dish is known for the unique combination of its ingredients and delicious flavor.
Night Entertainment at Avenida Revolución
Avenida Revolución is also the epicenter of nightlife entertainment in Tijuana, thanks to its great assortment of bars and saloons with different musical styles and genres for all tastes.
Most iconic above all is Black Box. Known for its legendary rock nights and live music, this venue is also the stage where several local, national, and international bands perform.
Meanwhile, gastronomy shines at "La Mezcalera", a must-see destination due to its wide variety of mezcal and delicious prepared drinks. Food trucks located in its backyard offer several gastronomic options.
Another popular option that you must visit is "Downtown Food Court & Bar" a space where six restaurants and three bars have gathered to offer food and drinks for all tastes.
We cannot talk about Tijuana's nightlife without mentioning "Las Pulgas", the city's most famous dance hall. Since it opened in 1988, it has always had an amazing lineup full of live entertainment with salsa, cumbia, banda, norteña, and pop rhythms for evenings full of fun and dance.
Old Jai Alai Palace and Walk of Fame
In Avenida Revolución, at the level of Hermenegildo Galeana Street, once can find Antiguo Palacio Jai Alai. Built in 1947, this establishment was originally the stage of exciting Basque pelota tournaments.
Today, this iconic building has been transformed into a modern showroom known as El Foro, where musical and cultural events take place all throughout the year.
Outside El Foro, one can find Tijuana's Walk of Fame. Over 200 distinguished people on cultural, artistic, scientific, technological, sport, business, and academic areas have been honored with a star engraved with their name at this landmark.
Wax Museum: A Journey through History
Just a street below Avenida Revolución, one can find the Wax Museum, located in 1st Street and inaugurated in 1993. This museum has more than 80 wax figures representing iconic characters and people from Mexican history, literature, cinema, and the arts. Some of the most famous wax figures located here are representations of Pedro Infante, Lola Beltrán, Luis Miguel, Cantinflas, Cuauhtémoc, Moctezuma, Venustiano Carranza, Porfirio Díaz, and Emiliano Zapata.
Considered the second museum of its type in Latin America, the Wax Museum is a fun option for both children adults that will take them on a journey through the past and the present.
Avenida Revolución: Evolution and Transformation
Avenida Revolución's transformation has become key in positioning Tijuana as an attractive and vibrant tourist destination: a place where the community can come together to enjoy lively and family friendly entertainment.
The Historic Downtown restoration project carried out by the 25th City Hall of Tijuana, led by Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana, together with the state government led by Governor Marina del Pilar, has allowed for the cultural, artistic, and tourist wealth and breadth of this area to be showcased to the entire world.
