They are everywhere. Magas full of maggots. Hundreds of them. Trumpists driven mad with the idea of making their country great again, but due to paradoxes and acts of fate end up living in Mexico.
Far-right Republicans who blame Mexicans of everything bad that has occurred in their weak country, but who are comfortably living in the coasts of Baja California, surrounded by these "bad hombres" that according to them flood their sacred and immaculate nation with fentanyl and rapists.
I don't know the driver of the truck in front of me at the Villa Floresta crossing in Rosarito, but I just need to see the three stickers and the Arizona license plates to imagine, with little margin of error, the sad story of his life. Two stickers certify his faith in Donald Trump's victory in 2024, another one qualifies him as a Vietnam veteran, and the wheelchair certifies that he has an injury.
I have no proof, but I would bet double the odds that this MAGA person lives in Baja California. He survives thanks to a pension that in the United States would condemn him to homelessness but that in Rosarito allows him to live in a trailer by the sea.
I could also bet that he only speaks English and that he has lived here for many years, and still hasn't made any effort to learn Spanish, as he thinks that we should adapt to his needs and address him always in his language. That's why we are here.
Something tells me that he goes crazy buying uncontrolled medications with no prescription with our relaxed drugstores and that his documents are not particularly in order with the Secretariat of the Interior. But as far as his white and protestant creed goes, bearing arms and firing at the slightest provocation is what he considers sacred.
He supports the wall, the strengthening of surveillance at the border, and if you urge me to say something else, without a doubt, they would love the idea of an armed intervention in Mexico, just like they support Israel's genocide in Gaza.
He feels disgusted by Kamala Harris and all that gang of left-wing liberals that govern the nation, but he feels confident that in November they'll be getting out of the White House and his orange skin idol will come back. The problem is that even if Trump wins, he won't stop living in Mexico. Sad but true, Metallica says.
Look colleagues: everyone can follow whatever political inclination and phobia they want, but I think that if you are committed Trumpist, it is not very coherent to eat and sleep in Mexico. According to the 2020 census, there are 132,673 Americans living in Baja California (there are actually many more). The General Consulate of the US in Tijuana is the American consulate that represents the biggest number of citizens in the world. We are the state with the highest level of American immigration in all of Mexico.
Most of these gringos are noble people and generally cool that leave important economic revenue in our lands and, very rarely, they actively get involved in community and improvement causes around them. I have known hundreds of them, many of them are our neighbors, and I actually quite like them.
Our land is a great binational and multicultural corridor, a diverse mosaic where all expressions can exist, and that is what makes Baja California so great. However, it is difficult to accept that there is somebody capable of promoting the hate speech and ridiculous paranoid racist diatribes by Trump. To me, there is nothing ambiguous about this issue: Trump is garbage. Period. People of the Lie, Kreator would say, but we are open and tolerant that even we live with them.
