“Tacos Varios Los Potrillos” in Tijuana fails due to a very sour green salsa

The sourness was so high that the taco did not pass

On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Tacos Varios Los Potrillos” located at Blvd. Manuel Jesus Clouthier 5561, Lago Sur. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a mole taco and a chicharron taco, both priced at $2.28 dollars ($40 pesos).

Mole Taco

This taco has chicken with mole, rice, beans, pickled purple onion, and it is served on two corn tortillas, which were medium size. In addition, they were quite strong, as they did not break due to the weight and humidity of the ingredients.

Chef Danny claimed that the mole flavor did not stand out in the taco as it was quite neutral, something that he prefers because it is not as invasive and one can taste the rice, the beans, and the tortillas. Though he did feel that the onion was very spicy as it had pieces of habanero pepper, the spiciness level was not that high. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.9.

Chicharron Taco

This taco has chicharron in green salsa, rice, beans, and it is served on two corn tortillas. The first thing to note about this taco was that the chicharron stew was too limp both due to the consistency of the protein and the sauce to the point that when Chef Danny grabbed the taco, part of it broke.

When he tried it, Chef Danny claimed that though the taco was seasoned, it was too sour. The Mexican husk tomato flavor stood out in the taco too much: it felt as it had too much of it and too much lime juice. The sourness was so high that he was not able to taste the chicharron, the beans, or the rice. The ingredient he was able to taste were tortillas because they were two. This is why this taco gets a rating of 5.5.

Price: $2.28 dollars ($40 pesos)
