Discover the intense flavor of Jalisco-style birria at “Birria de Res El Pelón” in Tecate

Its flavor is similar to Jalisco-style birria

On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tecate our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Birria de Res El Pelón” located at Av. Revolución 383-391, Espinoza, 21410. On this occasion, he tried two tacos: a birria taco priced at $1.35 dollars ($25 pesos) and a birria cheese taco priced at $1.89 dollars ($35 pesos).

Birria Cheese Taco

This taco has beef birria, onion, cilantro, red salsa, beans, asadero cheese, and is served on two store bought corn tortillas. When he tried it, the first thing Chef Danny noted was the spiciness of the salsa which had a very good flavor but was “very hot”, to the point that it could potentially cure a hangover very quickly.

The tortillas were hydrated quite well because the taco had been drenched in the birria’s broth. The beans really added taste to this taco. For Chef Danny, the birria had a very peculiar flavor, like the one they make in Jalisco, which is more intense. He added that in most of the taquerias he has gone to in Tecate, they have very spicy salsas which makes him think that they really love spicy food here or they make them “very angrily.” This is why this taco gets a rating of 8.4.

Price: $1.89 dollars ($35 pesos)

Birria Taco

This taco has beef birria, onion, cilantro, red salsa, and is served on two packaged corn tortillas. This taco’s tortillas were less drenched in grease and had less birria broth than the previous taco. It was medium-sized, but it was stuffed as it had a great amount of meat.

The fact that this taco had less grease in its tortillas meant that the intensity of the flavor also decreased. Since it had less salsa, the meat’s flavor and the rest of the ingredients could be tasted much better. However, the meat cut was apparently different for this taco because it had a harder texture. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.1.

Price: $1.35 dollars ($25 pesos)
