On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Tacos a Vapor” located at Av. Venecia 2703, Villa Fontana. On this occasion, he tried two tacos: a meat with potato taco and a pressed chicharron taco, both priced at $1.35 dollars ($23 pesos).

Meat with Potato Taco

This taco has meat stew with potato, pickled onion, cabbage, red salsa, and it is served on two corn tortillas. At first glance, Chef Danny said that the tortillas had been greased and had a very “generous” size, despite it being a steamed taco. He also said before trying it that the salsa had a good color.

When he took his first bite, the ingredient that surprised Chef Danny was the salsa, which was quite spicy. He said that it was possible that it had ancho or morita chili pepper due to its strong flavor, as well as chile de árbol because it was very spicy. The meat stew with potato was lacking in flavor. Both the pickled onion and the cabbage added freshness that it needed due to the amount of grease in the taco. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.9.

Pressed Chicharron Taco

This taco has pressed chicharron, cabbage, pickled onion, red salsa, and it is served on two corn tortillas. Again, the thing that stood out was the amount of grease in the tortillas, and that Chef Danny was able to see a little bit of meat in the chicharron.

When he tried it, he said that the pressed chicharron did not have texture or flavor. Just like with the previous taco, the salsa was quite spicy. The tortillas had a good flavor and were “strong” as they did not break, and despite having grease, they did not overwhelm the palate. He claimed that the chicharron was lacking flavor which is why this taco gets a rating of 6.8.
