On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancort went to “Carreta 22” located at Plaza Monarca, Boulevard Clouthier, El Lago. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a taco called “El Patrón” priced at $3.88 dollars ($68 pesos) and a veggie taco priced at $2.17 dollars ($38 pesos).
“El Patrón” Taco
This taco has arrachera (hanger steak), shrimp, cabbage mix, cheese crust, avocado, peanut salsa with bird’s beak chile, and it is served on a corn tortilla. One of the first things Chef Danny said was that the tortilla had been drenched in some type of grease.
Something else that stood out was the arrachera, which had been sliced in thick cuts so that its flavor could be detected. Chef Danny added that it looked as if it had been marinated and that it had a chimichurri style mix. He added that the cheese took over the part of the taco where it is more concentrated, which is why this taco gets a rating of 8.8.
Price: $3.88 dollars ($68 pesos)
Sweet Potato Taco
This taco has sweet potato, black bean, corn, cabbage mix, feta cheese, cilantro, pickled purple onion, tamarind salsa, and it is served on a corn tortilla. The tortilla had been buttered like the previous taco, and Chef Danny tasted both the butter and maize flavors.
The sweet potato was the ingredient that dominated and stood out in this taco, which was even greater than the tamarind salsa which was somewhat spicy. The feta cheese was neutral, and Chef Danny would have liked it if there had been more. The pickled onion provided a good flavor, as it is a new version of the classic pickled lime and vinegar. This is why this taco gets a rating of 8.0.
Price: $2.17 dollars ($38 pesos)
