Una Mordida Tacos arrives in Mexicali with this episode in which Chef Betancourt went to taqueria “Asadero El Nuevo Tecolote” located at Calzada Las Américas 390. Here he tried two tacos: a Campechano taco priced at $1.78 dollars ($35 pesos) and a choritaco priced at $3.30 dollars ($65 pesos).
This taco was the first taco our host tried and has chorizo, carne asada (grilled meat), flour tortilla, green sauce, and asadero cheese. The first thing Chef Betancourt said is that the taco was drenched in grease, which highlighted the chorizo flavor and the meat’s thickness, though it lost some taste due to the flour tortilla and the cheese.
One of the great things about this taco was the flour tortilla. Chef Danny recognized that Mexicali has “great experience” making tortillas and Danny liked this one because of its buttery flavor.
For our host, this taco overcame the greasy cheese and chorizo levels, but he only recommends it for people who like their tacos greasy. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.3.
This taco has carne asada (grilled meat), beef tripe, watery guacamole, charred sauce, and is served on a packaged corn tortilla. When he tried it, Chef Danny mentioned that this taco has a good flavor, praising its consistency and the meat’s thickness, which was crispy outside and soft inside.
Sadly, for Chef Danny the meat’s flavor was too subtle and he said that the meat’s flavor has been lost due to the other ingredients. He also thinks that the tortilla, though one could notice its corn flavor, was very dry. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.2.
