On May 14, the first MICHELIN Guide Award Ceremony took place in Mexico where attendants were witnesses to a historic night that celebrated Mexican gastronomy and the country’s greatest restaurants.
In this edition, the presence of several Baja Californian nominees as well as representatives from Oaxaca, Nuevo León, Mexico City, Quintana Roo, and Los Cabos, among others, stood out.
At this event, which took place at 6 PM and was livestreamed through the YouTube "Michelin Guide" channel, the new restaurant names and their respective awards that will be part of this list were revealed. One of the stars of the night was "Restaurante Amores" in Tecate which was given the Service Award.
Despite having several veteran restaurants with excellent offers for this year's guide, many new restaurants debuted on this list such as Animalón in Valle de Guadalupe, which was also given the Sommelier Award.
All the restaurants, their distinct culinary awards, and their special awards were all unveiled in this 2024 guide.
“(…) Mexico City, Oaxaca, Baja California, Los Cabos, Quintana Roo, and Nuevo León. All of these regions have delicious stories to tell, led by passion and excellence", stated Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides.

Baja California surprised many as more than 20 of its restaurants appeared in this guide, among them 3 establishments in Tijuana: "Misión 19", "Oryx", and "Tacos El Franc".

On the other hand, those awarded with the Michelin plaque, recognizing the quality of restaurants in Baja California, were “Carmelita Molino y Cocina” in Tijuana, “Casa Marcelo” and “Humo y Sal” in Ensenada, and “La Cocina de Doña Estela” in Valle de Guadalupe, among others.

What is the Michelin Guide?
The Michelin Guide is an worldwide reference in gastronomy, where restaurants are recognized due their quality and may receive from 1 to 3 Michelin stars, according to the excellence of their cuisine.
As such, the best of gastronomy in Mexico was recognized as well as the talent, passion, creativity, and respect for traditional cultures from local chefs.
The awards given in this ceremony are known as "Michelin Stars", though there are other awards such as the "Green Stars", for establishments committed with sustainability, and the "Bib Gourmand", for those who maintain an excellent price-to-amount ratio.
Some of the most important awards in Michelin Guide 2024 are the "Special Awards" which include the Michelin Service Award, Michelin Sommelier Award, Michelin Young Chef Award, Michelin Mentor Chef Award, and the Michelin Exceptional Cocktail Award.
