After the arrest of an agent in the United States who worked at Tijuana Prosecutor’s Agency, the State’s Attorney General, Ricardo Iván Carpio Sánchez, revealed new information about this case.

He stated that on Thursday, June 22, the agent had been working as an administrative assistant since 2015 at Tijuana’s Regional Prosecutor’s Agency. She left the office to eat, but she did not come back.

Her coworkers said they did not know if she had asked for a permit and they also mentioned that her being absent was not a regular occurrence.

According to information about this case shared by the prosecutor, the agent was involved in an ongoing investigation by American authorities.

On Thursday, an address in San Diego was under surveillance for being an alleged warehouse of illegal substances. At around noon, a male individual exited this place, got into a car, and went to a mall in National City.

For her part, the Tijuana native agent used her lunchtime to cross the border in another vehicle. She reached the same location as this male individual and they exchanged cars.

When the man reached this new address in another car, he was stopped by US authorities, with a search warrant; they searched the home and found several packages with cocaine.

Meanwhile, the woman was on her way to Tijuana on a private vehicle -according to Prosecutor Iván Carpio- and was arrested, as her car had left the drug warehouse, and there was a connection she had to explain. It is still unclear if there is a family relationship between these two individuals.

Carpio underscored that US authorities assumed that she had knowledge of this and had probably brought drugs into her country, despite the fact that when she was stopped, the vehicle did not have any illegal substances.

As such, this municipal agent is currently facing criminal charges in the United States for conspiracy and was fired from her position at Baja California’s Prosecutor’s Agency.

In addition, her sister, who had recently started working at this agency this year, and her mother, an older woman had been working in this institution since 2007, are no longer part of the agency’s payroll. According to Iván Carpio, both resigned voluntarily.

The attorney general said that the detainee’s job was to respond to several different tasks, documents, and appeals, and that she had no access to investigations or legal resolutions.

Internal actions at the State Prosecutor’s Agency

The head of FGE, Iván Carpio Sánchez, explained that they have criminally charged 23 officials of this agency in the last 10 months. These actions have been taken due to reports of authority abuse, in most cases. He also explained that six public officials were reported for domestic abuse and others have been fired due to drug use.

As such, he said that more than 2,700 drug tests have been carried out so that those who work at FGE are people who follow the law.

He said that the number of removed agents has been 67% more than in previous years; in previous administrations the only consequence for these agents was that they had to resign, while now, criminal charges are filed.
