On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Mexicali, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Asadero El Morlan” located at Carretera Mexicali-Tecate, Col. Progreso. On this occasion, he tried two tacos: a carne asada taco and a chicken taco both priced at $1.4 dollars ($27 pesos).
Chicken Taco
This taco has adobado roasted chicken, charred sauce, watery guacamole, refried beans, and everything is served on a handmade flour tortilla which was quite smaller to the usual kind. Its size was very similar to corn tortillas.
The first thing that Chef Danny said is that one could feel the taste of the oil and lard in the beans that are used to make it into a paste. The chicken had good flavor and the charred sauce helped to push the roasted flavor as well as the seasoning. Though Danny was recommended to add guacamole, it ended up just being watery guacamole which didn’t help the taco at all. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.8.

Carne Asada Taco
This taco has carne asada (grilled beef), refried beans, pico de gallo, watery guacamole, bird beak’s chili sauce with Mexican husk tomato and, just like the previous taco, it was served on a handmade flour tortilla. The first thing that Chef Danny said is that though the beans had a good taste, it caused the taco to be heavier and dry due to its pasty consistency.
The meat served is a short cut and is seasoned only with salt and pepper; both the watery guacamole and the pico de gallo gave the taco a little bit of freshness. The sauce was not hot, though Chef Danny was told it was kind of spicy. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.7.
