On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Mexicali, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Asadero Tres Pablos” located at Calzada de las Américas, Cuauhtémoc Sur. On this occasion he tried two tacos: an al pastor taco, priced at $1.7 dollars ($33 pesos) and a stuffed pepper taco priced at $3.6 dollars ($69 pesos).
Al Pastor Taco
This taco has adobada meat, pico de gallo, avocado slices, charred sauce, and is served on a handmade corn tortilla. When he took his first bite, he highlighted the meat being fried which was directly taken from the stick and cut in a thicker slice at the end, so one can appreciate both the grease and the meat.
The adobo was prepared in a very traditional south Mexican way, with a very pineapple-like flavor with its main highlight being the annatto. The seasoning was quite good and was quite tasty in the meat. The tortilla was also a highlight because of its great flavor and thickness. The pico de gallo was “saved” because of its avocado slices and the sauce, though it was Chef Betancourt’s own choosing, was lost in the taco. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.8.
Price: $1.7 dollars ($33 pesos)
Stuffed Pepper Taco
This taco is quite peculiar since it has a California pepper stuffed with carne asada (grilled meat), grilled cheese, a guacamole style sauce that Danny chose himself, and is served on a good-sized flour tortilla. The first thing to note is that before he took his first bite, Chef Danny noticed its good smell and Danny also said that the flour tortilla was not only made well, but probably made “that very day.”
The carne asada cuts were thick, it was cut in cubes whose sizes were good, and it was not marinated, just seasoned with salt. According to Chef Danny, this was one of the reasons why the meat was lacking in something that could intensify its flavor. The pepper was one of the things that Danny liked the most since it was charred and its texture was quite soft. This is why this taco gets a rating of 8.1.
$3.6 dollars ($69 pesos)
