Ismael Burgueño, Mayor of Tijuana, recently participated in the World Design Policy Conference, a crucial World Design Capital 2024 event, to highlight unity and cross-border cooperation. This event, taking place in San Diego, California, underscores the importance of Tijuana and San Diego working together, considering these two sister cities are joining forces to promote development and growth in the binational region.
Ismael Burgueño, Mayor of the City of Tijuana, accompanied by the head of the Municipal Institute of Art and Culture, Illya Haro, stressed that this is the perfect occasion to show both cities' commitment to economy, culture, environment, and social matters, using design as a driving force to improve the quality of life of all residents.
"In this municipal government, we recognized our opportunity to transform our mega-region through this appointment. It shares rich diversity and creativity, and we can transform it with the initiatives and projects that come to be during this year of joint work, as it is everyone's responsibility," the mayor of Tijuana said.
He added that the 25th City Hall of Tijuana will provide continuity to and strengthen high-impact social projects "because we are convinced that working together we will achieve better results for this cross-border region," Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana stated.
It should be noted that for the first time in 16 years since its inception, a whole region—not just a city—was chosen as a venue, proving that working together with a common goal will allow for better results in building the cities of the future.
For his part, Todd Gloria, the mayor of San Diego, said: "We are gathered here with a shared goal: to create a future that transcends borders and improves the well-being of the urban regions of the whole world. The entirety of San Diego and Tijuana, with design as the main focus, embodies a spirit of unity and innovation. Together, we transcend our border, our mega-region. This is not just an international cooperation center, but an example of what the future can be."
Therefore, Tijuana's commitment to design will be strengthened by promoting projects that improve the quality of life of citizens and their relations with the city of San Diego.
The World Design Policy Conference will be held on November 12 and 13 in San Diego, California. Work meetings will also be held regarding cities' design management and binational cooperation focused on innovation, borders, health, the creative sector, and well-being issues.
