The governor of Baja California and her counterpart from California, Gavin Newsom, inspected the progress made at the San Antonio de los Buenos Wastewater Treatment Plant to improve the environment for current and future generations in the Cali-Baja region. The goal of this joint effort between both states is to prevent sewage flows from spilling into the ocean.
At this meeting, Governor Marina del Pilar underscored that the water issue is a priority for both governments. This is why, with help from former president Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, the federation invested 600 million pesos in this water treatment project built by the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA).
"Due to the importance of this project, I visited President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to ask for financing, and he agreed to invest in federal resources. SEDENA is building this project because this saves time on bidding and supplies; plus, they work very fast," she said.
The state governor also recognized the support provided by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in resolving this old binational issue. This wastewater plant has not been in operation since 2015. However, its prompt restoration will allow environmental regulations regarding sewage flows into national and international bodies of water to be followed.
Governor Marina del Pilar explained that if the project had been bid, it could have taken 2 years or more to conclude. At the same time, SEDENA would have this plant in operation in just a few months.
For his part, California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed surprise at the project's progress and reiterated his desire to work together to improve the environment in both border regions.
The Secretary of Management, Treatment, and Protection of Water, Víctor Amador Barragán, said that once it is restored, the Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR) in the Punta Bandera area will be able to treat and reuse 800 liters of water per second.
