The Municipal Administration of Tijuana, led by Mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez, informed that they are currently on standby due to the possible arrival of citizens from Israel and Palestine in the city of Tijuana due to the recent armed conflicts in the region.
She said that according to the numbers from the Immigration Policy Unit of the Secretariat of the Interior, from January to August, 2023, 29,643 Israelis and 3,107 Palestinians entered the country as tourists.
“There is for sure a lot of people from these two countries that are still in Mexico, who will be forced to stay in our country and request asylum in the United States, because they won't be able to go back to their country due to this situation”, she said.
She explained that it is important to wait for announcements from US President, Joe Biden in order to provide special support to this community, just as it happened with Ukrainian citizens, when he launched an internet program to give them asylum that they could apply to anywhere in the world.
Lucero Vázquez mentioned that they will keep an eye on the San Ysidro and Otay ports of entry in case any citizens from these countries show up so that they can give them humanitarian assistance, asylum guidance, or in case they need it, shelter.
