Buying groceries is one of Mexican people’s main errands; either weekly or biweekly, they go to supermarkets and shops trying to spend as little as possible and get everything they need. Inflation hasn’t helped, as products’ prices have been increasing. For example, the price of an egg carton can reach more than $100 pesos in some establishments.
The head of the Federal Consumer Agency (PROFECO), Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, reveals every week an update of the country’s basic basket prices.
According to this report, in the northern zone (which includes Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sonora, and Tamaulipas), the cheapest supermarket not only in Tijuana but in all of Baja California is the Walmart store located at Plaza Galerías Hipódromo, where the basic basket is priced at $920.30 pesos.
This is an unusual occurrence as this same supermarket was always rated as one of the most expensive supermarkets. However, this time it was not placed on this list. In fact, no Baja Californian establishment was rated as the most expensive supermarket in this zone this week.
What are the products that make up the basic basket?
PROFECO claims that the basic basket can supply a family of four members during a period of one week. The basic basket consists of the following items:
