Food is one of the best excuses to create relationships or meet new places. A meal can close a deal, it works as a birthday gift, and can even improve anyone’s mood. As such, there is always an ongoing discussion on what the best dish is or what is the best gastronomy in the world. TasteAtlas made a list of the Top 100 Best Traditional Food in the world, by collecting information about the best gastronomic dishes worldwide.

As expected, Mexico appeared among the very best. Three Mexican dishes were ranked on this list and these are dishes that every tourist should try. Ranked #17, there is cochinita pibil, originally from the state of Yucatán. The main ingredient of this dish is pork, which is marinated with a mix of achiote, bitter orange juice, and garlic; it is baked, and once it is ready, it is shredded. It can be eaten in a taco, but can also be served by itself, accompanied with pickled onions, salsa, and vegetables.

The second Mexican dish that appears among the 100 best dishes is the famous carnitas, originally from the state of Michoacán, which were ranked #20 on this list. Made from pork, it is simmered in its own grease for a considerable time; when the meat becomes soft, the flame’s heat must be increased until the meat becomes crunchy so it can be shredded. Carnitas are usually eaten in tacos and served with salsa, onion, and, occasionally, guacamole.

Lastly, ranked #65 is the famous pozole, which is made in all of Mexico and is served as the main dish on special occasions. Its main ingredient is maize. It is one of the oldest Mexican gastronomic dishes. It is believed that in Pre-Hispanic times when sacrifices were taking place, the heart of the sacrificed was removed, and the rest of the body was cooked with corn and eaten by the priests. It is currently one of the most famous and colorful Mexican dishes. It is made with pork or chicken and it is served with cabbage, onion, and radishes.

Among the famous dishes from the rest world, the Japanese kare, the Brazilian picanha, Peruvian mixed ceviche, and Turkish shish kebab are all standouts.
