“Tacos de Guisado La Prieta” in Mexicali doesn’t pass the tortilla test

The flour tortillas were also handmade

On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Mexicali, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Tacos de Guisado La Prieta” located at Calz. Heroico Colegio Militar. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a pork rind taco and a beef with nopales taco both priced at $1.4 dollars ($27 pesos).

Pork Rind Taco

This taco has pork rind in red sauce, beans, and is served on a handmade flour tortilla which had a very good size. When he tried it, Chef Danny said that the sauce was at its ideal point since it was a bird beak’s chili sauce with Mexican husk tomato; it was at its perfect level of acidity, seasoning, and flavor.

The pork rind was a mixture of both skin and meat pieces creating a combination of textures that Chef Danny really enjoyed because it wasn’t salty. One of the things he didn’t like was that the refried beans were lost inside the taco. Though the flour tortilla was handmade and had a good flavor, it was too thin and it broke after the first bite. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.6.

Price: $1.4 dollars ($27 pesos)

Beef with Nopales Taco

This taco has beef, nopales, red sauce, and just like the previous taco, it is served on a handmade flour tortilla. The first Chef Danny noticed was the intense red color of the stew which, when tasted, was much spicier than what Chef Danny tolerates. He even said that they “made it when they were mad” due to how hot it was.

Chef Betancourt said that the flour tortilla had a good flavor, though it was very thin and it broke easily again. Another con was that the meat pieces were lost inside the taco. This is why this taco gets a rating of 6.6.

Price: $1.4 dollars ($27 pesos)
