AMLO’s morning press conference is characterized for having different topics, one of which regards families’ economies and prices of products often consumed by the Mexican people, such as those in the basic basket. According to his press conference, two supermarkets in Tijuana have the most expensive basic basket in all of northern Mexico.

Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, head of the Federal Consumer Agency, is the one in charge of explaining in detail in a section titled “Who’s who regarding basic articles’ prices” during the morning press conference. In this section, he reveals information about marts with the highest and lowest prices when it comes to the basic basket.

The supermarkets in Tijuana singled out as the most expensive in northern Mexico are Soriana Híper in Plaza Río, where the basic basket is priced at $1,032.80 pesos and Soriana Súper in Rampa Ruíz Cortinez located in Colonia Libertad, where these same products are priced at $1,028.75 pesos. Meanwhile, the place where one can get these products at the lowest price is in Mercado de Abastos in Monterrey, Nuevo León, priced at $832.60 pesos. All of these shops are located in the northern part of Mexico and it includes the states of Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sonora and Tamaulipas.

There are 21 products that are part of the basic basket, which take into account the feeding and usage for a week in one, four-member family. According to El Financiero, these are: corn tortillas, beans, rice grains, fresh whole chicken, beefsteak, pork chops, serrano pepper, onions, tomatoes, apples, limes, melons, bread, potatoes, carrots, brown sugar, soup pasta, toilet paper, and soap.

It’s been more than a month and Tijuana is still first place of supermarkets with the highest basic basket prices, not only in northern Mexico, but all over the country. The first time this was revealed was in January 17 in the morning press conference. This is also the first time in which two supermarkets of the municipality are in the most expensive list.
