Throughout the pandemic, scientists have discovered several mutations of the SARS Cov-2 virus, but one of the most talked about recently has been the so-called ''Californian strain”.

This mutation of the virus was initially detected in the city of California, United States, during the month of December of last year, thanks to a sample that had been collected in July 2020, and was present in the territory again in October of the same year, causing about 44% of the current diagnosed infections.

Even though repeated studies have been carried out on the California mutation, they have not been very conclusive, however, it has been revealed that it is 24% more transmissible than other variants detected, being classified as a "variant of concern" by U.S. experts, since it is suspected that it could be more resistant to vaccines, although for now there is no solid evidence of this hypothesis.

On February 5, the Spanish Ministry of Health announced the discovery of the first 6 cases of the so-called Californian variant in the country, which was called "El Diablo" by Charles Chiu, infectious disease researcher and physician at UC San Francisco, in an article published in the Los Angeles Times.hTe scientist highlighted that this variant could end up representing 90% of the infections detected at the end of March.

As of today, March 8, the California strain has already been present in 26 countries, the best known being the United States, place of origin of the variant with 9 thousand 583 accumulated cases, Mexico with 44 cases, Denmark 24, Australia 17, Japan 15 and United Kingdom 9.
