Ash Wednesday will be with 25% of capacity in Tijuana churches

The Archbishop of this archdiocese also mentioned that the ritual will be modified as a preventive measure in view of COVID-19.

Baja California started the week with an orange traffic light and with an increase in its capacity, however, Archbishop Francisco Moreno Barron, said he has given indications to continue with a 25% capacity limit in Tijuana's catholic churches.

This is due to the fact that next Wednesday is the celebration of the ritual of Ash Wednesday, which seeks to avoid more infections by COVID-19 in the city. In view of this, the head of the State Health Secretariat, Alonso Perez Rico, expressed his gratitude to this archdiocese.

"We are very grateful for what I heard today in the morning coming to this meeting, that there are activities, specifically the churches, that on Ash Wednesday will keep their capacity at 25 percent, that is something very favorable, that the activities themselves say: many people will conglomerate, here we are not going to have a chain of transmission, we will stay at 25 percent until Ash Wednesday passes. This is something very favorable and we are finally understanding after a year of telling them what, how and when we can reduce the number of cases. We would ask all other activities to be equally responsible".

In addition, the Archbishop commented that this year the ritual will be modified since "the minister should not touch the forehead, nor the face, nor the hands of the person receiving the ashes, but simply take the ashes with his fingers and let them fall on the person's head".

In turn, the expressions "Repent and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return" may be omitted or said on one occasion only for the faithful in general.

According to the Archbishop, compliance with hygiene and security protocols will also be verified, among which are the fluent access of people in order to avoid conglomerations.
