TIJUANA - The Copa MX draw for the Apertura 2014 season was held on Monday morning in Mexico, and Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Calinete were place in Group 3 along with Chivas of Guadalajara, and second division sides Tepic and Zacatepec 1948.
The Xolos will play a minimum of three matches against Chivas during the Apertura season with at least one game at home in the Estadio Caliente and one at the Estadio Omnilife in Gudalajara. The third match will be determined when the LIGA Bancomer MX announces the schedule.
The historic Cup competition in Mexico made its way back in 2012 after it had been discontinued back in 1996 when the league went to short tournament format. The first Cup competition in Mexico was back in 1907 and has been known as Copa Tower, Copa Eliminatoria, Copa Mexico, and now Copa MX.
The Xoloitzcuintles have only participated once in this competition in their shot history and it was the first Copa MX since the 17 year hiatus during the Apertura 2012. Xolos reached the semifinal round and were eliminated in penalty kicks by second division side Correcaminos.
The past three season Tijuana did not take part of the Copa MX due to its international competition. During the Clausura 2013 they were involved in the Copa Libertadores, during the Apertura 2013 they played the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL), and for the Clausura 2014 they played the knockout stage of the CCL.
