Tijuana, Baja California, July 28, 2024. - Mexican Patricio Castillo and Kenyan Beatrice Kemunto Gesabwa were the absolute winners of the 29h edition of the Medio Maratón Internacional in Tijuana, which took place on Sunday and was organized by the Municipal Institute of Sports (IMDET) with 5,500 runners participating.
This marathon, which is part of the 135th anniversary celebrations of the city by the 24th Municipal Administration of Tijuana, led by Mayor Monserrat Caballero Ramírez, began and ended at the Municipal Palace where runners met in the early hours of the morning.
Running for 21.0975 kilometers (13 miles), participants visited several tourism attractions in the city during the race such as Reloj Monumental, the Caliente Water Tower, Minarate, and the roundabouts in Paseo de los Héroes.
With a time of 1:04:52, Puebla native Patricio Castillo became the first Mexican to win this event in more than a decade, after it being dominated by foreign runners, especially from Kenya, in the most recent editions of this race.
In the woman's category, the winner was Kenyan runner Beatrice Kemunto Gesabwa who achieved her second victory at this event, after winning in 2022, with a record of 1:15:30.
This year, the award to the best native runner was for Eric Guillén who achieved a record of 1:12:11. The best native female runner was Graciela Nájera, who achieved a record 1:25:45.
Thanks to the sponsorship by webpages about running "Yo También Corro en Tijuana" and "Pinche Gordito Runner", the 2nd and 3rd Tijuana native places were also awarded which is why Tania Muñoz and Marysol Esparza, in the woman's category, and Mario Martínez and Víctor Javier, in the man’s category, also got on the podium.
