The immigrant crisis that Mexico’s northern border is currently experiencing continues to increase. Immigrants from all over the world continue traveling from the country’s southern border to the north, looking to get into the United States.

Immigrants coming from Russia, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, Honduras, Venezuela, El Salvador, and other Mexican states are camping at the limits of the northern border, right next to the San Ysidro port of entry.

Violence has been one of the main reasons why immigrants have left their homes. Such is the case of citizens from South Asia where political regimes are undertaking extremist actions or Mexican immigrants coming from states such as Michoacán, where entire families have abandoned their homes due to the violence caused by drug cartels.

Immigrants coming from Venezuela speak about the violence that has been increasing in the last few days, and the difficult economic situation that has been occurring during Nicolás Maduro’s presidency.

Tijuana lives an unprecedent situation in its history; thousands of immigrants continue to arrive in the border city without a clear plan or certainty that they will be seen by US authorities. Immigrants located at the pedestrian San Ysidro port of entry have said that communication with US border police agents has been practically zero. Immigrants have said that agents simply approach them to count them and then leave without any explanations.

It should be noted that since a month ago it hasn’t been possible to apply for political asylum through the CBP One app, which is the legal way that the United States, led by President Joe Biden, is asking immigrants to request it. The app, however, doesn’t work. As they are unable to get in through this way, their only alternative is to be seen by authorities personally. Despite immigrants’ difficult situation, the situation has remained peaceful.

Since May 11 and the end of Title 42, which allowed for the immediate expulsion of illegal immigrants in the United States, the immigrant wave has been arriving at the US-Mexico border. However, this has resulted in this current situation: a prolonged wait with no concrete solutions. On the other hand, those who manage to cross illegally and are caught by authorities, besides being immediately deported, will also be penalized with five years without being able to apply to legally enter into the United States.
