On this occasion, Baja Window to the South hosts Olga Sánchez de la Vega and Scott Koenig welcomed the audience from Telefónica Gastro Park, one of the first gastronomic park businesses that opened in Tijuana where there is a culinary option for everyone.

Their first guest was Enrique “Ejival” Jiménez, one of the directors of Telefónica Gastro Park, a music lover who also brews the beer “Lírica” at the gastronomic park facilities. Ejival is one of the organizers of Tijuana International Beer Festival, which will take place on June 11 and June 12 at the Estadio Caliente parking lot.

This festival will have the presence of Baja Californian and San Diegan brewers, some who are coming to the city for the first time. They will all join together in this great celebration filled with music, beer, and regional gastronomy. During this event, they will show the cross-border union between both cities and the way in which San Diego’s craft beer breweries had a lot of influence on Baja California’s. Both hosts and Ejival agreed that craft beer has become a part of the gastronomic culture of the region, and they invited tourists to not only try the food, but also try the beer!

Scott Koenig went back to Cien Años with Chef José Sparza to taste chapulines (Mexican grasshoppers), one of the most famous edible insects of Mexico. Although it is usually a “snack”, it can also be used as a main dish. These chapulines were prepared with onions, jalapeño pepper, and mezcal,. They were all served on tortillas with a little bit of Mexican husk tomato sauce and some mezcal shots to prepare the palate before eating the taco.

Gerardo Espericueta is the accordionist of the renowned group Nortec: Bostich + Fussible, and is also a singer and producer. An interesting fact: this talented musician is also the creator of the Baja Window to the South intro.

The accordion is Gerardo’s basic instrument which he fell in love with after studying music. The arrival of the accordion in Mexico created the musical norteño genre, when it began to be used with other instruments. Norteño is one of the most listened music styles in the region.

Gerardo was able to get into Nortec when one of the members of the group, Ramón Amezcua asked him to record part of a song for an album. They liked his style and years later they asked him to be part of their world tour as a replacement for their previous accordionist. Espericueta’s first presentation was in 2013 in Japan and he has continued to play with them until now.

In the Tacos With Muchachos section, Scott Koenig, along with Chef Denise Adriana Roa, went to El Lugar de Nos where they tried a pork belly taco which also had purple radish, cheese, charred sauce, vegetable, and is all grilled. These ingredients and the way they are prepared delighted Scott, ending another great episode of this show.
