Tijuana

The idea for "Nueva Tijuana" is making its way through the Baja California Congress

The argument is that a single city hall cannot meet the needs of the whole Tijuana population

Tijuana is one of Mexico's most populated cities, with 1 million 922 thousand 523 people. And, while the Central Zone and Rio appear to be in good repair, several places seem to be abandoned, with no public lighting, asphalt, or access to drinking water.

As a result, Morena delegate Araceli Geraldo Nez recommended this week that Tijuana be divided into two municipalities to serve better the city's Eastern Zone, which comprises roughly 436,554.70 hectares and is home to more than 269,587 inhabitants.

The deputy submitted for consideration to proceed with the analysis so that the territorial demarcation known as the East Zone is known as a municipality: "made up of the La Presa delegations, a proportional part of Otay Centenario, Los Pinos," he stated during a meeting with the Congress of Baja California on Thursday, December 9.

Araceli Geraldo, a member of Congress, discusses the idea to partition Tijuana:

"They want to become a municipality owing to both territorial and population conditions, as well as the necessity to access public services that have not been able to be delivered over time by the authorities due to their distance, economic conditions, population, and territory."

During his campaign trips, he said, a group of individuals stated their desire for a municipality that provides the public services that this area need, such as drinking water, sewerage, and electricity, among other life-sustaining services daily.

Nueva Tijuana would become Baja California's eighth municipality, and the deputy was instructed to transmit the idea to the Commission on the Interior, Legislation, and Government Points so that "what is rightly suitable" could be resolved. Similarly, she requested that the analysis be completed and that, if approved, "the processes provided by law" to establish this territory as a municipality be completed.

It should be emphasized that the motion must be presented to the appropriate plenary session for a final decision; however, with a majority in favor, the process will be hastened; 13 individuals voted in favor, zero abstentions, and four against.
