The Municipal Directorate of Attention to Migrants in collaboration with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), with the financial support of the European Union and the participation of the XXIII City Council, inaugurated the Community Center for Peaceful Coexistence in Tijuana.
The space will promote the social, labor and cultural inclusion of people in the context of mobility, that is to say, it will provide assistance and shelter to national and foreign immigrants and the local community.
The place was inaugurated by the head of the Welfare Secretariat, Priscila Bustamante Hernández, on behalf of the municipal mayor, Karla Ruiz Macfarland.
The event was also attended by the UNHCR representative in Monterrey, Shant Dermegerditchian, and virtually by the Ambassador of the European Union in Mexico, Gautier Mignot, who emphasized that:
"The European Union seeks to promote a more stable, inclusive and less violent environment for refugees and asylum seekers in northern Mexico. This Center will offer a space for social integration between people in need of international protection and local people".
This is part of a larger program to support and protect immigrants and asylum seekers on Mexico's northern border. The UNHCR-supported plan will involve funding of 4 million euros provided by the European Union.
The Municipal Direction of Attention to Migrants will be in charge of managing the operation of the center, which will carry out various activities and projects with joint actions for the benefit of these agencies.
The Community Center for Peaceful Coexistence in Tijuana is located at 8311 Coahuila St. between Francisco I. Madero Street and Miguel Negrete Avenue, Downtown, and will offer workshops and training for immigrants to learn a trade. In this way they will be able to get certified and integrate into a job that will help them to pay for their living expenses.
