From the second border restrictions were reported to continue at least until August 21, several institutions and political figures were upset for having to postpone once again the expected economic reactivation that only the reopening can give to the region.
Such was the case of San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, who called the federal authorities' resolution a mistake, arguing that it is hurting the region's economy, particularly San Ysidro's businesses.
In fact, some San Diego businessmen have accused the federal government's actions of "whim", the executive director of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce, Jason Wells, said to the media la-lista that the border closure is nothing more than a "political whim" that is related to the immigration crisis.
He added that he does not understand how it is possible to maintain the restrictions with Baja California, when the Mexican state has already reached 70% vaccination of eligible people. A percentage similar to San Diego, which already has 70% vaccination of citizens over 12 years of age.
Unfortunately, authorities have shared that since the restrictions began, 200 businesses have been closed. The San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce, headed by Wells, as well as various political figures, continue their attempts to lift the restrictions, however, the federal government's refusal persists.
