Tijuana Aims to Be a Susteinability Leader

The city will start a pilot program to get recognized at a national level

The Mexican Chamber of Construction Industry (CMIC) will test a pilot program in Tijuana, where engineers and architects with expertise in sustainable construction and energy efficiency will be trained with the main goal of turning this city into one with a high level of susteinability.

This program will be carried out later in 43 delegaciones (district/borough) from other states.

Cesar Romeo Sauceda, president of the CMIC mentioned that only 5% of the works carried out in the city comply with the rules or parameters of sustainable projects, which will reinforce three main axes in construction: economy, society, and ecology.

"The program will be simultaneous, but this is our starting point, because we believe it's an important issue for our region; we are a binational region and we need to standardize the criteria that we already have in other countries. It is not new. These are requirements to be more aware of the environment and we must adjust to those needs," said Romeo.

The benefits will be reflected on the population, says Silvia Camarena, head of training at the Institute of Training of the Construction Industry, which will also try to generate a broad competitiveness in Tijuana.
