Otay II Port of Entry and Airport-Playas de Tijuana Elevated Viaduct will be finished in 2024

The president of Mexico called on US authorities to conclude their part of the project, as he has claimed that both projects will be concluded before his term ends

In the morning of Friday, November 10, the president of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador held a press conference in Tijuana, Baja California.

The president addressed questions regarding the construction of projects by the federal government such as the Elevated Viaduct and the Otay II Port of Entry.

López Obrador claimed that both projects will be inaugurated before his term ends, although he recognized that there are some issues regarding the construction of the elevated viaduct due to the right of way.

"Despite obstacles from certain neighborhoods (...) we will reach an agreement, and if not, we will proceed legally because above all personal interests, no matter how legitimate, there's general interest, the interest of the collective," he said.

He added that regarding the Otay II port of entry, the project should be concluded before September 2024. However, he encouraged the US government to speed up work regarding their part of the project as it is a joint project.

"I call US authorities from Tijuana to do what they need to do, they are very delayed, and we won't be able to take this step that is very necessary to increase traffic and merchandise," he emphasized.

Elevated Viaduct: What you need to know about the construction of this new project

This viaduct will connect Playas de Tijuana with the Tijuana Airport and it will have integration with the San Ysidro port of entry. It is a project by the federal government to strengthen the economy at the border which will decrease traveling times and improve safety for people. In addition, it represents a saving of fuel of 39% and a reduction of carbon emissions by 53%, benefiting the environment.

The construction of the Tijuana Elevated Viaduct will allow for greater connectivity between the Tijuana International Airport, the San Ysidro/Puerta de México port of entry, and Playas de Tijuana, as it will reduce traveling times.

Due to this project's construction, Avenida Internacional remains closed and this construction work will last approximately 6 months.

Currently, more than 7,000 square meters of potholes have been repaired at Avenida Venustiano Carranza, Arias Bernal Street, and 2nd Street, stated Marco Antonio Campoy Arce, director of Municipal Projects and Urban Infrastructure (DOIUM).

The state official said that these roads will be used as alternate routes due to closures caused by this project from the Federal Government.
