The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) informed that the weather phenomenon known as "El Niño" will continue until at least April 2024, and could make next year even warmer than this one.
This natural phenomenon tends to be associated with temperature increases on Earth's surface and oceans worldwide.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, November 8 on the organization's official social media pages where they also warned that this phenomenon tends to last between nine months and one year.
"El Niño is expected to fuel further temperature increases. It will exacerbate extreme weather and climate-events, like heatwaves, floods and droughts," the organization wrote in a statement.
At the same time, it explained that this weather phenomenon occurs periodically but irregularly, in intervals that range from 2 to 7 years.

"The year 2023 is now on track to be the warmest year on record. Next year may be even warmer and break new records," the statement reads.
WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas pointed out that these temperature changes worldwide are not just because of El Niño, but also related to global warming, created mainly by greenhouse gases emissions.
El Niño could cause more natural disasters in 2024
“Extreme events such as heatwaves, drought, wildfires, heavy rain and floods will be enhanced in some regions, with major impacts," Taalas predicted.
It should be noted that last October, a hurricane hit the coast of Acapulco, Mexico. "Otis" went from being a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in just a few hours.
