The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has a commitment with cleaner air and greater access to public transportation, which is why they are currently celebrating its first route with a completely electric rapid bus.

This launch will provide the first rapid service of its type operated by electric battery in South Bay, San Diego, connecting the Otay Mesa Transit Center with several different spots at Imperial Beach coasts.

It is a more sustainable, ecological, and efficient option for passengers and the city's tourism and economy.

"Rapid 227 means better bus service for South Bay and binational commuters. With the launch of Rapid 227, MTS will offer more than 600 extra hours of service between the border and Imperial Beach when compared to existing service," said Stephen Whitburn, chair of MTS and a San Diego City Councilman.

To celebrate the launch of this new service, MTS has said that Rapid 227 will be free until Tuesday, October 31.

It is expected that the complete Rapid 227 project is finished in 2024. MTS says that there will also be new stations and services, traffic lights in Coronado Avenue/30th Street, and improvements at the Iris Avenue Transit Center.
