Special cell is assigned at Municipal Detention Facility for LGBTQ+ community

The government of Montserrat Caballero aims to fight any type of discrimination against this part of the population

The 24th Municipal Administration of Tijuana led by mayor Montserrat Caballero has made a commitment to safeguard the integrity and rights of people of the LGBTTTIQ+ community, which is why the assignation of a special and proper cell was made at the Municipal Detention Facility (Estancia Municipal de Infractores or EMI) for this part of the population.

"We have made progress to make cells at the EMI more adequate. We are of course on our way to improve even more, but we are one step ahead to make these spaces more proper," mayor Montserrat Caballero said.

People who are part of this community have expressed their feelings regarding incidents they have suffered due to exclusion, discrimination, and aggression in work, school, and family environments.

Due to the agreement made by councilor Óscar Montes de Oca, president of the Governing, Legislative, and Regulatory Commission, a cell was assigned inside of the EMI that can be used exclusively by members of the LGBTTTIQ+ community. This is because several cases of discrimination and abuse towards people of this community have occurred by other offenders that are also detained and who are not part of this community.

"I want to thank the mayor, here in front of the members of the LGBTTTIQ+ community and tell them that with support and aid from the mayor we are doing right by you. There are some things that are pending, but we will resolve them little by little," councilor Montes de Oca stated.

Tijuana, being an inclusive municipality that bets on diversity, enforces and looks after the rule of law for the LGBTTTIQ+ community while promoting equality and respect towards them.

For the 24th Municipal Administration of Tijuana, human dignity is intrinsic to all people just by being and existing, which is why it recognizes that society consists of diversity in all of its different areas, and this leads it to recognize the rights of LGBTTTIQ+ people.
