Marina del Pilar and AMLO present “Bienestar” plan at Isla de Cedros

The governor of Baja California spoke about the actions that have promoted wellbeing for the inhabitants of Isla de Cedros in collaboration with the federal government

Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, the governor of Baja California, alongside the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel López Obrador, presented the “Plan Integral para el Bienestar Mulegé-Isla de Cedros”, which is known for being one of the most remote regions of the state’s urban zone, but with more contact with authorities. This has been demonstrated by constant health campaigns and other actions to provide comprehensive wellbeing to citizens, such as the repair of roads leading to the island and pending actions so that all homes have basic utilities such as water.

Marina del Pilar recognized President López Obrador for being the first president in decades to visit the island, one of the most remote regions in the urban zone of Baja California, however, with more contact with authorities, demonstrated by constant health campaigns, comprehensive wellbeing actions, repair of roads leading to the island, and pending actions so that all homes have water.

President AMLO made a series of commitments such as the construction of a Bienestar University, the delivery of scholarships, the follow up and strengthening of wellbeing programs, and providing healthcare to vulnerable groups. He also recognized Governor Marina del Pilar for managing and making progress on the Isla de Cedros highway, which will be finished by the federal government.

With a social perspective, President López Obrador emphasized that the salt exporting company won’t be privatized and that there will be specific aid frameworks to support the two most recent municipalities of Baja California: San Quintín and San Felipe.

Alongside the governor of Baja California Sur, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, Marina del Pilar stated that the arrival of the Fourth Transformation meant the end of the age in which inhabitants of remote locations were ignored by authorities, because they are close with society and one can see that because all of these island’s homes have at least one kind of aid from the government of Mexico and the government of Baja California.

"We have begun the comprehensive assistance plan in Isla de Cedros, whose main goal is to improve the quality of life of this island’s inhabitants regarding health, social wellbeing, and housing. It is a coordinated process to promote a true transformation on this island which ranges from strengthening social programs to social wellbeing so as to provide better hospital infrastructure, medical care, and mobility. Because in Cedros nobody is left behind and nobody is left out,” the governor said.

Marina del Pilar stated that women and men at Isla de Cedros can provide great lessons about resistance and self-management, as for decades they have resisted adversity thanks to solidarity and collective and cooperative work, boosting economic activities such as abalone fishing and salt export, both sea products.

"That’s why we are promoting aid so that our fishermen can always consolidate themselves as small companies and acquire new equipment, because this is a place privileged by nature, whose geographic position is ideal for export and whose sea biodiversity is ideal for fishing,” she underscored.

She also spoke about the restoration of 142 homes for vulnerable people with a federal investment of 60 million pesos and the support of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Urban Development, and Territory Redesign of Baja California (SIDURT) with machinery and materials to strengthen the construction process of homes. In addition, there is the construction of an electric energy emergency plant for healthcare center facilities on the island.

"The best time and moments for Isla de Cedros are beginning because today you have a government that is walking alongside all of you. A new era began with the governments of the Fourth Transformation. Wellbeing and heart are sister words and they and will always walk alongside all of you,” Marina del Pilar stated.
