Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, the governor of Baja California, highlighted the work by personnel from the state health department who provide free medical assistance to immigrants and homeless people in the state, taking care of the wellbeing of vulnerable people.

The state governor pointed out that, through the Secretariat of Health, the needs of immigrants in the different shelters of the state are addressed, which joins the activities that are taking care of the wellbeing of homeless people in the state.

As such, she said that in Downtown Tijuana on Thursdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, between 8 AM to 2:30 PM, immigrants are provided with health assistance, achieving results regarding control of degenerative chronic diseases, among other conditions.

Breakfast kitchen Padre Chava, located at Avenida Melchor Ocampo in Downtown Tijuana, has been historically used as a meeting point for immigrants and homeless people, as they are offered food, the opportunity to bathe, wash themselves, and clean clothes.

The state governor highlighted that they are working together with the Secretariat of the Interior, DIF Baja California, the Institute of Psychiatry, and civil society organizations, as well as rehabilitation groups for people who use alcohol and drugs, which offer their programs and facilities for those who want to take shelter.

For his part, the Secretary of Health of Baja California, J. Adrián Medina Amarillas, stated that this is not only about preventing diseases and assisting those who have them, but changing comprehensively the way of living for these people.

He added that in Mexicali, periodic assistance is provided at shelters Hijo Pródigo and Nuevo Amanecer, where they check and detect aliments while also giving talks about disease prevention and healthy living.

In addition, medications are provided and treatments and transmissible diseases are followed up, keeping permanent campaigns active in the city of Mexicali, especially during the months where temperatures are at their highest.

The secretary thanked the heads of the Breakfast Kitchen for providing support to health authorities so as to comprehensively assist this segment of the population.

Regarding the mycobacterium program, staff guides the population regarding tuberculosis detection and provides assistance to those who have breathing symptoms. It was revealed that all health centers have professionals trained to detect tuberculosis, as well as the necessary medications and protocols to assist those who have this disease, guaranteeing a high rate of recovery among patients.

Regarding the HIV, hepatitis C, and syphilis program, fast tests were carried out with instant results, to channel people who are positive and need treatment. For their part, staff from the Senior Program is in charge of detecting people with high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes in coordination with the Preventive Medicine Agency.

It should be noted that people who require specialized or next level medical care will be channeled to the general hospitals in Tijuana and Mexicali, where they will receive comprehensive, free, and universal medical service.
