Beaches in Tijuana will remain closed during Holy Week due to contamination

This closure will continue until further notice

In order to protect citizens, the Beach Committee has reiterated that beaches in the municipality of Tijuana will remain closed until further notice, including during the Holy Week vacation period. This is due to studies carried out by the Federal Commission of Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) which have concluded that they are not ready to be used.

The Secretariat of Urban and Environmental Territorial Development (SDTUA) through the Direction of Environmental Protection (DPA) shared that, as results from the pre-vacation Holy Week 2023 studies carried out and published by this federal agency, it was determined that 7 samples show that the beaches are not recreationally suitable for people.

“Mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez’s priority is to prevent health risks. The Committee will hold a meeting next Monday, April 3 to follow up on consolidating the teams to carry out the work in order to benefit the population and visitors coming to our region,” said the head of DPA, Alejandro Muñoz Gil Lamadrid.

It should be noted that from the samples dated from February 28 to March 18, it was discovered that the waters had exceeded acceptable levels of pathogenic microorganisms in the following beaches: Tijuana I (San Antonio del Mar), Baja Malibu, Playa Blanca, Tijuana II (Parque Mexico), Tijuana III (La Mojonera/ El Faro), Cañada Azteca, and El Vigía.

For this particular case, enterococci bacteria are indicators of fecal contamination, which means that there are no optimal conditions for recreational use and contact with the water.

On February 11, 2023, the beaches were closed as a preventive measure with support from the Playas de Tijuana Delegation and signs were installed to let people know about this closure. The Municipal Administration urges the population to follow preventive instructions to avoid possible health risks.
