David Alvarez, renowned San Diego assemblymember, introduced a new bill (AB 837) that will secure 383 acres so that the city of Chula Vista has a university of its own. This proposed bill would give the city an exemption to the Surplus Lands Act for the land that has been acquired for the University-Innovation District.

According to what’s been revealed by David Alvarez in a press conference: “Adding a university in the City of Chula Vista would generate immense economic benefits reverberating across the extended region.” In addition, he highlighted that AB 837 would make it more possible for this to happen.

It should be noted that in the United States, people with college degrees have a higher chance of getting higher purchasing power and can earn around $32,000 dollars more per year than people who only finished high school.

On the other hand, a university can develop approximately 4,000 residential units as part of the UID mixed-used project.

“The UID project, according to city regulations, will require at least 5% of these units to be affordable for moderate-income homes, 5% of these units to be affordable for low-income homes, and 5% of these units to be affordable for very low-income homes,” a press statement revealed.

In fact, current mayor of the city of Chula Vista John McCann has said that this bill introduced by Alvarez will give the city the capability to create a world class university that will provide young people in the south of the county the higher education opportunities that they need to improve their lives.
