One of the most awaited astronomic phenomena in this new year is close to arriving. The green comet passes Earth every 50,000 years, in an event that we will never see again. That is why knowing which states of Mexico are the best locations to watch it is essential.
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration better known as NASA, this meteor identified as C/2022 E3 (ZTF) was discovered by a team of astronomers who were using a field inspection camera at Zwicky facilities last March.
Currently, one can see it if using a telescope, but that won’t be necessary on February 1, when this celestial body reaches the perihelion, the nearest point to the Sun, while also reaching the perigee, the nearest point to Earth.
Despite this, NASA explains that “the glow from comets is notoriously unpredictable”.
For their part, the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE) says that “its maximum approach to Earth will be at a distance of 0.28 astronomical units (AU) and 1.16 AU from the Sun”.
In addition, it will be visible with a magnitude equal to 63 from 19:19 PM until 03:08 AM of that day with the maximum being at 21:27 PM.
In which states will this comet be seen best?
The green comet can be best observed with the naked eye from high places and free of air and light pollution, which is why we recommend the following places:
Parque Nacional Pico de Orizaba, Puebla
Here is where INAOE is located, so there will be guided visits.
Xochicalco, Morelos
An archaeological site in a high-altitude area that will surely be filled with magic on that day.
Parque Nacional San Pedro Mártir, Baja California
Here the National Astronomic Observatory of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México is located.
Desierto de Wirikuta, San Luis Potosí
Perfect to get away from visual and light noise.
Are you ready? Just know that you don’t need any special equipment to see the green comet on February 1st.
