The Mexican National Football Team got their fans’ hopes up by winning 2-1 against Saudi Arabia in the third match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. For the first time since the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, the Mexican National Football Team is left out of the knockout stage due to a goal difference that favored Poland, who earned its 2nd place.

The game took place at Lusail Iconic Stadium, as the last match of Group C.

The Game

It seems the criticism during the entire World Cup strongly affected Mexico’s football players, as they played on the field with a completely different attitude in comparison with their matches against Poland and Argentina.

The Mexican football team started by going straight ahead with players Chávez and Orbelín Pineda shooting for the goal and demonstrating that this team could be more dangerous when attacking.

The best thing about this match occurred on the second half. In the 47th minute, Chávez kicked a corner kick from the left, the ball got to the first post, and César Montes was able to deflect the ball towards Henry Martín, who was left undefended, and he scored against goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais. The score was 1-0.

In the 52nd minute, Chávez became a hero again. He made a free kick outside the penalty area and the ball entered through the upper left angle, and Mexico had scored 2-0 against Saudi Arabia.

Despite Mexico playing better than their opponent, the only play by Saudi Arabia changed the match. It occurred through a pass by Hattan Bahebri which landed with Salem Aldawsari who scored, defeating Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa, and ending any hope for Mexico.

With these results, Argentina wins 1st place of the group with 6 points, Poland wins 2nd place with 4 points, and both of them qualified for the knockout stage. Mexico also had 4 points, tying with Poland, but goal differences put them on 3rd place. Saudi Arabia ended up with 3 points.

The Argentinian National Football Team will face off against Australia on the knockout stage, Poland will face off against France on December 4, while Mexico will be packing up their bags to go back to our country.
