Pilot program to speed up border crossings at the Tijuana-San Ysidro Port of Entry begins on Tuesday

Catalino Zavala spoke about the importance of this project that will benefit the binational relations between San Diego and Tijuana

On Tuesday, November 15, the binational program whose goal is to speed up border crossings at the San Ysidro port of entry will begin operations.

Last November 9, 2022, Tijuana and San Diego authorities concluded the historic agreement that is looking to benefit both sides of border in which, for the first time, border crossings will be sped up at the end of the year for the Christmas holidays.

As such, municipal administration workers have begun working at the border crossing line. So far, speed bumps have been installed where filters will be used to identify citizens crossing into the United States.

This project will be located at the Sentri and Ready Lane lines, and will be open 24 hours a day, with three different shifts. Filters will have clear signs and agents trained to quickly check proper documentation.

The Secretary of the Interior of Baja California, Catalino Zavala, stated that this collaboration will allow us to speed up traffic flow, which will have a positive impact in Tijuana, since quicker border crossings mean benefits for both sides of the border which is already the busiest border in the world with 100,000 daily crossings.

Starting tomorrow, agents from the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Protection (SSPCM), the National Guard, and the Institute of Migration (INM) will be present and their support will maintain order and streamline the identification of civilians that are looking to cross the border.

The San Ysidro Port of Entry is possibly the busiest border worldwide and it represents a key element between the binational relations between Tijuana and San Diego. Hundreds of thousands of people come and go daily, in what is now the normal way of living in the border. The economic revenue generated by this social phenomenon is of great importance to both entities.
