Governor Marina del Pilar presents strategies to strengthen water supply in Baja California

Several key projects have been proposed in order to prevent Baja Californian families from running out of water

Today, during Governor Marina del Pilar’s morning press conference, eight strategies were presented that will strengthen the water supply in Baja California; their goal is to guarantee that no Baja Californian family runs out of water as it is a guaranteed right. The project that has gathered all of these strategies is the highest investment in the last 30 years.

During the 49th edition of “Wednesday Morning Press Conference with Marina del Pilar” that took place in Tijuana, Marina del Pilar stated that the lack of sustained maintenance during several years has increased current challenges.

“Our goal is to make the water supply guaranteed for everyone. This is why we are developing the first phase of our infrastructure projects where we are already working on eight projects that are quite significant,” said Marina del Pilar.

First, the governor of Baja California pointed out that the construction of a desalination plant to supply the east coast of the state is being proposed; it will generate 1,000 liters per second. This project is a binational project and it will begin its development in 2023 so as to begin operations in the first trimester of 2025.

In addition, Marina del Pilar explained that another project is the restoration of the raw sewage sanitation plant at San Antonio de los Buenos in the city of Tijuana, which will be able to eliminate ocean pollution and take advantage of the wastewater to sanitize it to be used for agricultural development. This project will launch in 2023 and it is estimated that it will be concluded in the second semester of 2024.

The third project is the expansion of the desalination plant in Ensenada, so that it increases its capacity from 250 to 500 liters per second. It will begin construction between April and June 2024 and it will begin operations at the end of that year. For the city of the Tecate, the project includes the expansion of the purification plant La Nopalera, which will increase its capacity from 175 to 350 liters per second, meeting the needs of all Tecate families.

The fifth project is the restoration of the Colorado River Tijuana Aqueduct, which will allow it to operate at maximum capacity by the end of 2023. The sixth project consists of an investment of 400 million pesos to restore potable and sanitary water networks infrastructure as they are about to collapse due to abandonment.

The state governor added that the strengthening of the sanitation plant El Naranjo in Ensenada will prevent sea pollution and will allow it to take advantage of sanitized wastewater for the winemaking industry. Its capacity will increase from 500 to 1000 liters per second with an investment of 835 million pesos; this project will be concluded by the end of 2024.

The governor also explained that the sanitation plant Abelardo L. Rodríguez will also be restored and it will allow it to take advantage of the water at the Abelardo L. Rodríguez dam to improve the water supply in Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito. Here, 32 million pesos will be invested and it is estimated that this project concludes between January and March 2023.

In addition, there is also a project for an aqueduct at Valle de Guadalupe, the expansion of plant Las Arenitas, the construction of a desalination plant in San Quintin, and the restoration of Pumping Plant Number #1 at the Tijuana River floodgate.

“The goal of all these projects is to respond to the current demand, but also to boost the state’s development, because our commitment is not only to govern right now, but to leave Baja California with an inheritance: projects that will guarantee a better future for all people,” Governor Marina del Pilar concluded.
