Baja Californian government facilitates right to an identity for minors born in the United States

More than 600 children have been benefited thanks to the “Soy México” program promoted by the government of Baja California

Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, governor of Baja California, through the Civil Registry Office of Baja California, kicked off the “Soy México 2022” campaign which promotes and facilitates registering children and teenagers born in the United States with guardians born in Mexico. The state governor states that, so far this year, 646 children have been benefited thanks to this campaign which has helped mothers, fathers, and guardians save an important amount of resources.

Marina del Pilar underscored that it is her administration’s priority that all Baja Californian children and teenagers have the necessary paperwork to have an identity so as to guarantee for them basic services such as education and health.

She explained that those who are interested should go to the nearest Civil Registry Office to fill out their application, as well as submit their U.S. birth certificate, the Mexican guardian or parent’s official ID, and the guardian or parent’s CURP.

The benefit of this program, according to the government of Mexico, consists of exempting them from stamping, translations, and certificates of birth inexistence, achieving savings of $2,600 pesos to $5,600 pesos for all beneficiaries.

It should be noted that, though these savings apply to all of the municipalities of Baja California, in Mexicali there is an additional cost of $990 pesos as part of the 2022 Revenue Law by the XXIV Municipal Administration.

Lastly, the managing director of the Civil Registry of Baja California, Elizabeth Márquez, revealed that the total of beneficiaries is as follows: 223 in Tijuana, 154 in Mexicali, 143 in Playas de Rosarito, 80 in Ensenada, 31 in San Quintin, and 15 in the port of San Felipe.
