September 2 was a day that caused commotion not only in Tijuana, but in all of Mexico and international media, because of the disappearance of José Alberto Cantero Ramírez, a Tijuana native shopkeeper who had gone out one day prior on his vehicle.

After several investigations, it was discovered that Cantero had been stopped by a Tijuana municipal police unit at Calle 16 in Colonia Libertad. The victim’s vehicle had been found on September 11 in Downtown Tijuana. It was determined that he had been stopped for no reason. After José Alberto followed orders from the officers and exchanged words, he was cuffed and was put inside the police vehicle unit illegally.

Genetic results confirmed that the body of the burned body found in Colonia Libertad surroundings was identified as José Alberto Cantero Ramírez. According to witnesses, people wearing blue clothes left the body at the scene, close to the train tracks. The prosecutor said that José had been kidnapped, had his money stolen, was murdered, and burned so that his body could not be identified and the perpetrators could not be caught.

Thanks to tests, an arrest warrant was issued for kidnapping against two municipal police officers, Martín Trinidad “N” and Esteban “N” as well as search warrants for both of their addresses. Baja California’s Attorney General, Iván Cario Sánchez, stated that both are considered “traitors to security, justice, and the people.” Both were arrested and charged last September 28 for the crime of kidnapping.

When their addresses were searched, a firearm was discovered as well as several dollar and Mexican peso bills which, in total, make up approximately $44 to $45 thousand dollars. This is the same amount that was reported by Cantero’s family that he had in order to close a deal; he was a salesman and was going to carry this business deal out the day he was illegally detained. Four months were given so that investigations could continue; the alleged perpetrators are currently in custody.

“It is important to thoroughly follow the law correctly, firmly, and justly for those people who are ever disloyal to the values, goals, vision, and mission of this institution whose goal is to bring justice,”, it was said during a press conference. It was also claimed that the investigation was carried out swiftly no matter who was actually responsible for these crimes.
