While many people risk their lives to cross into the US to achieve the American Dream, others claim that the other side of the border has a dream of its own that is not precisely “American”. This is because many people from the US have chosen to live in Mexico, mainly in the state of Baja California.

The new “American Dream” basically consists of living in Mexico and working in the US, something that was already very common for decades with Mexican Americans. However, one can now see Americans changing their homes and moving to Tijuana or Playas de Rosarito.

In fact, there is a YouTube channel called “Mexico Relocation Guide” where Americans help their countrymen to move to Tijuana or some other municipality close to the border. This channel has testimonials of people who have taken advantage of low rent prices (in comparison with California) and have moved here to get the best of both worlds.

Eréndira is an adult woman who lives in Playas de Rosarito and gave a testimonial for this YouTube channel. She claimed that she moved from Los Angeles and lived 40 years in San Diego. After this, she decided to move to Playas de Rosarito.

I chose Rosarito because it is a very pretty, small town. I don’t think it is a big city… I am from a big city and I didn’t want to live in a big city like Tijuana.

She stated that Playas de Rosarito is perfect because it is only a few minutes away from the border and she can cross to the US to go shopping, go to the doctor, visit friendships, and other activities. Something else that she liked is that the weather is very similar to San Diego’s.

“There are a lot of good restaurants in Rosarito. I enjoy going out a lot with my friends to get something to eat. There is a cultural center, so there’s art and it is great because most events are free.”

Eréndira shared that when she arrived in Mexico she was able to buy a lot where she built a house. This is something that is impossible to do in the United States for a variety of reasons, mainly economic ones. “I have a career but I wouldn’t have been able to buy it in the US like I did in Mexico,” she shared.

However, she said that there are things that very different from the US, for example, water and gas. In Rosarito, it is very common for gas and water to be refilled, but in the US, except in very specific rural areas, this is not very common.

She also said that in Playas de Rosarito two sides of her can live here: the Mexican side and the American side. This is why she started a help program for foreigners who need help to change their place of residence.

Thanks to this, Eréndira is able to help other Americans to file their visas and look for homes so that they can enjoy a quiet life full of music, gastronomy, and color.
