A fire that started at Bajío del Toro, in the northern part of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park (PNSSPM) still continues in an area of approximately 80 hectares, according to the Secretariat of the Environment and Sustainable Development (SMADS).

PNSSPM Subdirector Verónica Meza López pointed out that a general strategy against fire is needed with helicopter support for this type of incidents, and that it is indispensable to guarantee continuing operations such as bringing in firefighters, supplies, and helicopter buckets or “Bambi buckets” to deal with this from the air.

“We need more support because there have been changes in climatic conditions and wind directions, making the fire spread more quickly and move towards areas where there is more fuel. This is why elements to fight the fire and type II helicopters such as UH1H or BELL 212 are required,” Meza López said.

She also revealed that the fire is being monitored via satellite by the National Biodiversity Knowledge & Use Commission (CONABIO), through the “Early Alert System” and heat spots.

She emphasized that meetings are being held with the Technical Operative Group and the Board of Directors of the State Committee to Manage Fires in Baja California in order to update strategies to fight fires at the National Park.
