Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda announced the ecopark project Esperanto, that will be built at the Abelardo L. Rodríguez dam, one of Tijuana’s most important natural areas. This project is part of the “RESPIRA” program, which has as its fourth pillar the need of Baja Californians for more green areas.
The state governor underscored that, since the beginning of her administration in November 2021, one of the priorities of her government has been to restore public spaces that had been forgotten in previous administrations, so that they can be used by the general public. “We are talking about three times the size. It is going to be Tijuana’s biggest green area and that represents a better environment, better quality of life, and better development for our city and our families,” she said.
In addition, Marina del Pilar recognized that these actions will be supported by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, through CONAGUA, which once again demonstrates the federal administration’s interest in transforming Baja California, promoting always the wellbeing of those who need it the most.
For his part, the Coordinator of Regeneration Projects of Public Spaces, Carlos Torres Torres emphasized that the state administration’s intention is to think about the future of our state, especially for children who need more and better areas to develop plentifully. Likewise, he said that Tijuana has 0,8 meters of green area per person. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the ideal is that there is 16 meters of green area per person.
“This was a really nice surprise for me. I am very excited due to this invitation. First, I salute you, governor, for these actions. Definitely, you already had Tijuana people's heart, but with this you are also taking with yourself the soul of Tijuana, especially from those people in the east area who know how much they are lacking in green areas. The fact that you are taking your time to assist us here and all Baja California, that is an effort that I thank you for. You are welcome here always, this will always be your home,” Tijuana’s mayor told Marina del Pilar.
“Meanwhile, the Secretary of Infrastructure, Urban Development, and Territory Redesign, Arturo Espinoza Jaramillo stated that the public works will begin in no less than two months, including a series of attractions that are looking to create the most important and biggest green area in the city. The official emphasized that Tijuana natives are interested in having more spaces for healthy and proper recreation.
The state official stated that the area of the Abelardo L. Rodríguez dam has 130 potential hectares, with a terrain that covers the dam’s perimeter and will have several different leisure activities such as zip lines, floating islands, bike routes, hiking routes, among others. The project is being carried out through coordination between the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), led in Baja California by Francisco Bernal Rodríguez, as well as the State Commission of Public Services of Tijuana (CESPT) who could start a project so that recycled water is used in the plants that are planted in this new area.
At the event, Luis Luteroth, President of the Development Council of Tijuana (CDT) and the Committee President of Tijuana Innovadora, José Galicot Behar, were both present. Both businessmen are committed to promote works and projects that improve the lives of Tijuana natives, which is why they will be deeply involved in the project.
