Due to the region’s climate conditions, a lot of patients in Tijuana tend to get treated with diseases related to allergies and asthma.
Because of this, Dr. Gerardo Zúñiga, certified pediatrician and allergist spoke about the most common pathology types that he treats.
The main ones are allergic rhinitis, asthma, hives, atopic dermatitis, food allergies, and suspicion of primary immunodeficiency.
During the interview he emphasized that, in order to get an accurate diagnosis, he thoroughly questions patients[b] in order to explore their family history, related comorbidities, if they are overweight, if they play sports, if they drink alcohol or smoke, as well as environmental factors that could make certain conditions more likely. A physical examination is also carried out during consultation.
The most common symptoms are congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes. In case of asthma, patients usually show symptoms of coughing, pressure in chest, and difficulty breathing. Those with atopic dermatitis have dry skin, itchiness, redness, welts, and general dryness.
Dr. Zúñiga said that [b]several of these symptoms are chronic, constant, progressive and are not controlled by conventional medical treatments, which is why to bring relief he uses skin tests, antihistamines, inhalers, creams, and other medications that take effect long term, be it weeks or months. Telling this to the patient is very important so that they collaborate with habits that can help them improve their quality of life.
Another treatment is specific-allergen immunotherapy (better known as “allergy vaccines”), which are focused to dampen the adverse effects of allergen elements responsible for allergic diseases that are hard to avoid such as pollen, mites, among others.
Not sleeping well and not being able to exercise and work are some of the limitations that patients with allergies and asthma deal with every day.
Lastly, the specialist revealed the types of food that people are most allergic to:
Dairy proteins, soy, wheat, peanuts, fish, egg, and seafood.
