If you are American and tend to visit Rosarito, it is important that you know that fines for parking in handicapped spaces are quite high. Also, you may want to avoid a bad moment with local police who are not especially popular among tourists.

Recently an American received a fine for $4,000 pesos (approximately, $200 dollars). Her violation: parking in a space with a blue color, which is only for people with a handicap.

The American woman stated that a man that did not identify himself suggested her to park in that place. According to her, the man (commonly known in Mexico as “viene-viene”) seemed to be watching over the cars, which is why he said that there was no problem if she parked it there. The woman claims that the time she was parked there was only a few minutes. She went into the store to buy something, paid, and when she got out, a Rosarito municipal police car was waiting for her.

The tourist tried to convince the police officer of what had happened, stating that the unidentifiable man had told her there was no issue. However, the man was no longer there.

It is recommended that to avoid situations like this, you must respect established traffic signs in the state, as well as not trust people who say that there is no problem if you park in places that are meant for people with specific characteristics.

In the end, the fine was cheap. In the United States, a violation of this kind could have gone up all the way to $400 dollars ($8,000 pesos approximately). In this case, the total fine was $4,811 pesos. Another thing to note about fines is that if the individual is from the United States, they should pay the fine as soon as possible and must be accompanied by the police officer to the corresponding offices to pay this fine, according to Article 193, Section VII of Traffic Regulations in the Municipality of Rosarito.
