During the morning press conference on May 10, Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that if countries are excluded from the Summit of the Americas that will take place in the US, he wouldn’t attend.

Instead, the president said that he would send someone to represent him, specifically, chancellor Marcelo Ebrard would take his place. For the president, this is a way of protesting for universal solidarity.

Moreover, he shared that there is no reason to fight in these times but rather that it is time “to join together as brothers” and, even if countries have differences, these can be resolved pacifically by listening to feuding parties.

At the same time, López Obrador denied that this decision will negatively affect Mexico’s relations with the current US administration led by Joe Biden. “We have a relation of friendship and respect,” he said.

“Biden has always been respectful, but there is still time for the summit to begin. We may reach an agreement,” the Mexican President said, not committing to a definitive “no” answer.
