Enrique Chiu, Tijuana native artist, presents “Humanidad Migrante” mural in Egypt

Two murals related to migration were unveiled in Cairo

As part of the project "Humanidad Migrante" (Migrant Humanity), Mexican artist Enrique Chiu presented two murals related to migration in Cairo, an event that took place on March 29, 2022 in Maq'ad del Sultán Qaitbey.

The unveiling ceremony was led by Mexico’s Egyptian ambassador, Octavio Tripp; head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Office, Laurent De Boeck; the Assistant Minister for International Cooperation of the Migration Ministry of Egypt, Ambassador Mohamed Kahirat; and the Director of Archinos Architecture Foundation, Agnieszka Dobrowolsk.

The murals were created during three days of work with help from migrants located in Egypt and neighbors in the community where the works of art will stay. They all collaborated with artist Enrique Chiu.

During the ceremony, the ambassadors of Bangladesh and Guatemala made speeches that talked about the migratory phenomenon in their respective regions. Meanwhile, Ambassador Tripp reasserted the commitment that Mexico has with migrants’ dignity, something, he highlighted, that it has in common with Egypt. Both countries are territories where migrants travel through, come to, are born in, and return to.

Both murals are part of the Humanidad Migrante (Migrant Humanity) project, promoted by the Embassy of Mexico in Egypt and the IOM, which opened last March 24th with a photo and picture exhibition, as well as the screening of the documentary “Un mundo sin muros” (A World Without Walls) and a talk about art and migration at The Greek Campus in Cairo.

More than 50 people attended the event, among them the ambassadors of Argentina, Guatemala, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Bangladesh, Bolivia, and representatives of Colombia, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Peru. The Mexican convoy and the Marsanto organization placed a plaque of “Area and territory of peace” as part of their mural tours that will be carried out by artists Chiu, Gerardo Meza, and Alison Almada, with help from neighbors, in other cities and countries.

Enrique Chiu (1981), is a Mexican artist who is famous worldwide for painting the “Mural de la Hermandad” (Mural of Brotherhood) in Mexico’s northern border. He will be in charge of a tour through the embassies of Mexico in other countries this year and the next with support from Mexican embassies and the Secretariat of Foreign Relations.
